Assam: Anti-Superstition Day observed to honour Padma Shri awardee Birubala Rabha's legacy

The Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) today commemorated the first death anniversary of Padma Shri awardee and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Birubala Rabha by observing it as “Anti-Superstition Day 2025”. The event was held at the RHAC Secretariat auditorium in Dudhnoi, drawing participation from community leaders, newly elected council members, and representatives of Rabha national organizations.

Dr. Rabha, remembered as a tireless social reformer, dedicated her life to eradicating superstition and harmful traditional practices, especially in rural and tribal communities. Her passing is regarded as a monumental loss to the grassroots activism movement in India.

The commemoration began with a ceremonial lamp-lighting in front of her portrait, led by RHAC Chairperson Sonaram Rabha. This was followed by a floral tribute from Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha, and subsequently, by Vice-Chairperson, Chief Secretary, and other dignitaries of the council.

Despite the solemn backdrop of ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, the event was conducted with dignity and introspection. Prominent figures such as Dashanan Rabha, President of the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee, spoke about Dr. Rabha’s remarkable journey, her fearless advocacy, and her role as a voice for the marginalized.

The program also witnessed active participation from newly elected general members of the RHAC and office bearers from various Rabha community organizations, reaffirming a shared commitment to carry forward Dr. Rabha’s mission against social evils rooted in ignorance and fear.
