Assam: Artificial flooding disrupts life in Juria, 5 schools suspend classes

A severe artificial flooding situation in Juria in Assam's Nagaon district has affected around 20 villages and submerged nearly 10,000 bighas of agricultural land, disrupting normal life in the area.

Water has also entered the premises of several schools, forcing five schools to suspend classes, according to local residents.

The flooding has been reported in more than 20 areas, including Adhakunda village, with roads, agricultural fields and residential areas inundated.

Residents have alleged that inadequate drainage arrangements and the alleged illegal blockage of culverts in several locations have prevented rainwater from draining naturally.

The accumulation of water has affected large stretches of agricultural land, raising concerns among farmers over crop damage and loss of livelihood. Waterlogging has also disrupted transportation in several areas.

Residents have accused the administration of failing to take timely steps to drain the accumulated water and demanded immediate measures to address the situation.

They have also questioned the alleged inaction of the Rupahi Revenue Circle administration despite complaints regarding the blockage of drainage channels and culverts.

Local residents have called for a permanent drainage solution to prevent recurring artificial flooding in Juria and provide relief to people in waterlogged areas, including Lalung Gaon.
