Assam: Artificial floodwaters inundate schools and colleges in Ledo following heavy rainfall
Ledo College and Ledo Senior Secondary School, two higher educational institutions located in the Ledo area under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district, Assam, have once again been submerged due to artificial flooding following heavy rainfall.
According to local sources, both institutions have been facing recurring artificial flood situations for several years, causing repeated disruption to academic activities and affecting students and staff.
Residents and institutional authorities stated that an adjacent kaccha (earthen) drain flowing alongside the campuses overflows during periods of heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging across surrounding areas and within the educational institutions.
Following heavy rainfall on the previous night, floodwaters entered the campuses and continued to inundate the institutions till today, creating difficulties for normal functioning.
Teachers and students expressed concern over the recurring issue and alleged that multiple representations and applications had been submitted to the concerned authorities seeking a permanent solution. However, they claimed that no concrete action or positive response has been received so far.
Local residents maintained that the problem could be addressed through scientific excavation and proper construction of the existing earthen drain to ensure efficient drainage and prevent overflow during monsoon periods.
People in the locality further alleged that the Assam Government, the Margherita MLA, the Margherita Co-District administration and other concerned authorities have not shown adequate attention or urgency in resolving the long-standing artificial flood issue.
The recurring inundation has once again raised concerns over infrastructure planning and flood mitigation measures in the area, particularly around educational institutions that continue to face disruption during the rainy season.
