Assam: Assamese medium school makes strong comeback with massive admission demand in Sivasagar
In a significant shift reflecting renewed public confidence, parents in Sivasagar have shown overwhelming trust in government Assamese-medium schools, with long queues witnessed outside a historic primary school for admission forms.
At the 1 No. Town Primary School located in the heart of Sivasagar town, parents began lining up from Monday evening to secure admission forms for the pre-primary section. Despite adverse weather conditions, many spent the entire night on the pavement outside the school gate to ensure they could collect the forms scheduled to be distributed at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, February 24.
The school, established in 1882, has 110 seats available in the pre-primary section. However, the rush for admission forms has turned into what many described as an unannounced competition among parents eager to enrol their children.
The growing demand highlights a renewed faith in mother-tongue education and the quality of teaching at the institution. Unlike the common perception that often favours private or English-medium schools, this development signals a positive turnaround for government Assamese-medium schools in the region.
The 1 No. Town Primary School is regarded as a model institution and has built a reputation for providing quality education. Its academic standards and disciplined environment have made it a preferred choice among parents.
Notably, the school has a rich legacy. Eminent personalities, including noted poet Jatindranath Duara and educationist M. I. Bora, have been associated with the institution in the past.
Parents expressed hope that the renewed interest in Assamese-medium government schools marks the beginning of a stronger revival of mother-tongue education in Assam, moving beyond the earlier overemphasis on English-medium institutions.
