Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Rift widens as AGP leaders seek autonomy in candidate selection for Morigaon

Tensions have surfaced within the AGP-BJP alliance in Assam over seat-sharing for the 2026 Assembly elections, with the Morigaon constituency emerging as a flashpoint.

The district leadership of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), in an extended executive meeting held on Sunday, voiced dissatisfaction over what it termed “unequal development” in the constituency. Without naming individuals, leaders expressed discontent and urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its alliance partner, to concede the Morigaon seat to AGP in the upcoming polls.

AGP leaders further informed that the district unit will forward a formal proposal to the party’s central committee, pressing for the nomination of an AGP candidate from Morigaon.

When asked about possible measures if the BJP refuses to part with the constituency, district AGP leaders refrained from revealing their strategy, stating that such decisions would be conveyed “at the appropriate time through a press conference.”

The meeting, held at the Morigaon district AGP office, primarily discussed the party’s role in case the BJP does not agree to its demand. The stand taken by the district unit highlights growing friction within the ruling alliance as both parties gear up for the high-stakes 2026 Assembly polls.
