Assam Assembly Polls 2026: AGP weighs options after BJP stakes claim in Bongaigaon

Senior AGP leader and former MLA Bhupen Roy on Wednesday, February 11,  indicated that discussions are underway regarding seat allocation in the district, even as the BJP has expressed interest in contesting either the Bongaigaon or Abhayapuri Assembly seat.

Speaking to media after attending the AGP’s women’s biennial convention at Jogighopa, Roy said the AGP plans to contest three Assembly constituencies in Bongaigaon district. He noted that the BJP has proposed the name of senior leader Phanibhushan Choudhury from the AGP’s side.

“As an alliance partner, if the BJP seeks one constituency, that is not a major issue. We will consider it,” Roy said, signalling flexibility while underscoring that no formal decision has yet been taken.

His remarks come a day after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in Bongaigaon that the BJP would contest either the Bongaigaon or Abhayapuri Assembly seat in the district.

Responding to questions on whether differences could arise over the Abhayapuri seat, Roy maintained that the matter would be examined internally by the AGP leadership.

“The AGP does not have the organisational strength to field candidates in all constituencies. We will contest only in seats where we have a strong chance of winning,” he said.

While clarifying that formal talks between alliance partners have not yet taken place, Roy added that if the Abhayapuri seat is ultimately left for the BJP, the AGP could consider alternative strategies, including contesting as an Independent or opting for a friendly contest.

Despite the emerging complexities, Roy emphasised that the AGP remains committed to the broader alliance objective. “Our goal is to ensure the NDA returns to power,” he said.
