Assam: Attack on Dehing Tea Estate employees sparks outrage in Margherita, workers demand justice

Tensions escalated in Margherita under Tinsukia district, Assam after two employees of Dehing Tea Estate were assaulted by unidentified assailants. The incident took place in the early hours of September 5.

According to one of the victims, Bijender Kumar, he and his colleague, Shyam Sundar Tanti, were heading home after completing their work shift when the attack occurred. Around 2:45 AM, as the duo traveled near National Highway 315 in Margherita, a white Bolero vehicle intercepted them. Without warning, several individuals, one of whom was reportedly dressed in a police uniform, descended from the vehicle and launched a violent assault on the two workers. The assailants not only beat the victims severely but also vandalized their motorcycle.

Bijender Kumar revealed that following the attack, the miscreants handed each of them Rs. 500 for medical treatment and fled the scene. The reason behind the attack remains unclear, but the involvement of someone in a police uniform has raised serious concerns.

Hari Nanda Gorh, secretary of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Margherita branch, strongly condemned the assault and urged authorities to take swift action. He has called on the Margherita Co-District Commissioner and local police to investigate the incident thoroughly, especially in light of allegations that a perpetrator was impersonating a police officer.

In response, the Margherita Co-District Commissioner assured that if such an incident is confirmed, appropriate legal measures will be taken against the culprits. The local community is now anxiously awaiting justice for the victims.
