Assam: Bajali hosts dazzling cattle ramp walk to mark Goru Bihu

In a vibrant and culturally rich celebration of Goru Bihu, the Govindapur Sattra in Bajali, Assam hosted a unique cattle fashion show, where farmers proudly paraded their well-groomed and traditionally adorned livestock on a specially designed ramp.

The event, now in its 20th year, was initiated as a means to promote the deep cultural bond between Assamese farmers and their livestock. Aimed at encouraging proper year-round care of cattle and fostering pride in agricultural heritage, the show has gained widespread recognition both nationally and internationally.

On the day of Goru Bihu, participating farmers bathed and decorated their cattle with traditional Assamese ornaments, garlands made from bottle gourd flowers (lao-bengena), and various cultural accessories. The ramp itself was adorned with symbolic elements of Assamese rural life, including farming tools, handwoven gamocha, japi (bamboo hat), xorai (ceremonial tray), and fishing gear. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by performances featuring traditional Bihu music, dhol, and pepa.

This year’s event was inaugurated by Senior Cabinet Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, adding to its stature. Celebrated cattle farmer and Gopal Ratna Awardee Bharat Kalita, who has spearheaded innovations in cattle rearing in the region, was also felicitated during the ceremony along with several other contributors to the agricultural community.

In a heartening show of support, local organizations, cultural groups, and individuals contributed cattle feed, medicines, and other essentials to the participating farmers, acknowledging their role in sustaining rural traditions and animal husbandry.
