Assam: Bangladesh-based Jamaat-e-Islami 'threats' spark fear in Dhubri border villages

Residents of border villages in Assam’s Dhubri district have raised alarm after receiving threatening phone calls and audio messages allegedly from individuals linked to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), a fundamentalist group in Bangladesh.

Villagers in Lakhimari and Bishkhowa under Golakganj police station reported that the messages, traced to a Bangladeshi number, contained explicit threats of “terrible consequences” for anyone arrested by the police.

The caller also warned that homes in the border belt could be set ablaze if villagers assisted security forces in taking action against the outfit.

The fresh threats follow an incident on the eve of Independence Day when Golakganj police arrested a youth from the Indo-Bangladesh border area with a Bangladeshi SIM card and national flag.

He was later remanded to jail.

In the wake of these developments, residents have approached both Golakganj police and the Border Security Force (BSF), seeking enhanced protection. Security agencies are treating the issue with seriousness, given the rising concern over attempts by anti-India elements to destabilise the sensitive border region.

Locals fear that the growing frequency of such incidents indicates a wider network of anti-India activities gaining ground along the Dhubri border, posing a potential threat to peace and stability.
