Assam: Barekuri's Hoolock Gibbon conservation gets state recognition

The village of Barekuri, situated in Assam’s Tinsukia district, is brimming with joy ahead of the Bihu festival, following the state government’s announcement to honour the Barekuri Parivesh Unnayan Samiti with the prestigious "Asom Gaurav" award.

The committee has played a pivotal role in the conservation, awareness, and protection of the endangered Hollong (Hoolock) gibbons in the region. This recognition has sparked celebrations among the locals, who see it as a testament to their sustained efforts in environmental conservation.

Expressing gratitude, Diplab Chutiya, President of the Barekuri Environment Development Committee, extended his heartfelt thanks to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state government for acknowledging their work.

Residents of Barekuri are hopeful that this recognition will not only encourage further conservation efforts but also enhance the region’s tourism potential, drawing attention to its unique biodiversity and ecological significance.
