Assam: Barpeta Satra holds historic election, oldest democracy worldwide

Assam's Barpeta Satra, one of the oldest Vaishnavite monasteries in the state held its election on September 29.

The historic event, a cornerstone of the Satra's democratic principles, has been a tradition since 1935, predating India's independence.

Barpeta Satra, nestled in the heart of Assam, is renowned for its unique blend of spirituality, culture, and democratic governance. Unlike other Vaishnavite monasteries in the region, where the Satradhikar (head of the monastery) is appointed, Barpeta Satra has a democratic system where the Burah Satriya (President of the Satra Managing Committee) and Deka Satriya (Vice-President) and the members of the managing committee are elected by the Satriyas (members of the monastery).

The election process at Barpeta Satra is a meticulously organised affair. Voters, numbering 8410 this year, cast their ballots at 15 polling stations across the Satra. For the coveted position of Burah Satriya, two candidates have entered the fray, while 36 candidates are vying for the 28 seats in 18 constituencies on the managing committee.

The significance of this election extends beyond Barpeta Satra. It serves as a poignant reminder of the rich democratic traditions that have existed in India for centuries, long before the modern nation-state was established. The Satra's democratic practices have been a source of inspiration and a testament to the resilience of democratic ideals in the face of adversity.

Barpeta Satra itself is a treasure trove of history and culture. Founded by Mahapurush SriSri Madhavdeva, disciple of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, a 16th-century saint and social reformer, the Satra has played a pivotal role in shaping Assamese society and culture. Its sprawling complex houses numerous temples, shrines, and educational institutions. The Satra's intricate architecture, exquisite artwork, and vibrant cultural activities continue to captivate visitors from around the world.

The election at Barpeta Satra is not just a political event; it is a celebration of democracy, tradition, and the enduring spirit of a community that has stood the test of time. As the votes are counted and the results announced, the Satra will once again embark on a new chapter in its long and illustrious history.
