Assam: Barpeta satra witnesses massive gatherings as Doul Mahotsav kicks off

The revered Doul Mahotsav has kicked off at Barpeta Satra, drawing large gatherings of devotees. The four-day-long festival began on Thursday, March 13 featuring a series of religious rituals and vibrant celebrations.

On the occasion of Gondh Sabha or Bahnutsav, the sacred premises of Barpeta Satra resonated with devotional fervor. As part of the traditional rituals, the idols of Doul Govinda Mahaprabhu and Kaliya Thakur Gosai were ceremoniously brought out from the Monikut Griha (inner sanctum) of the Kirtanghar.

The deities were then taken to the Mathar courtyard of the Satra, where they were placed on Bor Sarai and given a Maha Snaan (holy bath). Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Khool, Taal, and Dhol, along with soulful kirtan chants, the ritual infused the Satra with a divine ambiance.

Later in the evening, a Meji (holy bonfire) was lit in the Tupor Chotal, around which the deities were circumambulated seven times before being enshrined in the Yogmohan Griha. As per astrological calculations, they will be placed in the Doul Griha later at night.

Adding to the festive spirit, local artisans organized a spectacular fireworks display, illuminating the night sky over Barpeta Satra and mesmerizing the gathered devotees.

On Friday morning, following Sattriya traditions, the Bura Sattriya (head priest) will conduct the Faku (Holi) rituals by offering colored powder to the deities. Devotees will also have the opportunity to seek blessings from Doul Govinda Mahaprabhu and Kaliya Thakur Gosai.

The Bhar Doul celebrations, marking the festival’s grand highlight, will be observed on Friday and Saturday, followed by the Suwori Utsav on Sunday, which will conclude the festivities in a spectacular manner.
