The vibrant spirit of Durga Puja has swept throughout Assam just like it has in other corners of the country.
However, during the time when the Durga puja pandel's breathtaking decorations are catching the eyeballs of viewers, the Durga puja in Dokreswar devalaya of Barpeta is being celebrated in a unique style.
Following the legacy of Ahom king Siva Singha, the devalaya are celebrating puja in a unique style.
"Unlike other devalayas and temples, we here celebrate Durga puja in a complete Vedic manner, without following the tradition of sacrifice," said one worker of Dokreswar devalaya.

"Here we don't have the tradition of worshipping clay-made idols," he added.
In contrast to today's tall/huge clay-made idols, a religious effigy made of turmeric, banana tree and seven other tree stems, is used, for worshipping in Dokreswar devalaya.
But tragically, the holy place of worship is facing the threat of soil erosion from the Brahmaputra River.
The committee members and the devotees are therefore appealing to the Government to take necessary action to prevent the holy site.
