Assam: Batadrava devotees protest on Janmashtami, seek restoration of police station

Devotees, Vaishnavas and Aai-Matris of Batadrava Than, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva, staged a protest on Janmashtami, demanding the restoration of the Batadrava police station and expressing concern over the security of the area.

The protesters said the Batadrava Assembly constituency, development block, Zilla Parishad and Satra Gaon Panchayat had been affected by administrative changes. They said the removal of the police station, which they described as important for maintaining law and order and ensuring the security of the historic religious site, had added to their concerns.

The protesters appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and address their demands. They said they would take their agitation to the streets if their concerns were not addressed.

Residents of Salaguri and Narowa Satras, along with office-bearers of Batadrava Than, including Namgowa, Gayon-Bayon, Sutradhar, Palideuri, Hatimota and Muktiyar, participated in the protest.

The protesters also raised concerns over the safety of local residents. They demanded the restoration of the police station, saying it was necessary for the security of the local population.

The protesters raised slogans appealing to the Chief Minister to “restore our existence”.

The protest was held on Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna.
