Assam: Batadrava police summon BDO in probe into deaths of two girls after MGNREGA signboard collapses

Batadrava Police have summoned Block Development Officer (BDO) Shikha Gogoi for questioning as part of the investigation into the deaths of two schoolgirls after an MGNREGA signboard collapsed on them at Dhaniyabhati in Assam’s Nagaon district.

Gogoi was questioned by the police and details were sought on various aspects of the incident.

The deaths have raised questions over the construction of the signboard and alleged use of substandard materials. Questions have also been raised over possible negligence involving elected representatives, contractors and officials and employees associated with the then Batadrava Development Block and Dhaniyabhati panchayat.

Police had also detained the mason who constructed the signboard for questioning. He was released later the same night.

There are also allegations that some intermediaries are attempting to shield the BDO, Gram Rozgar Sahayak (GRS), engineer, contractor and other officials and employees concerned from responsibility. These allegations have not been independently established.

The families of the two girls continue to wait for justice, while allegations have surfaced that the investigation is progressing slowly.

The incident has put the focus on the quality of construction of government project infrastructure and accountability of those responsible for its execution.

Further investigation is expected to establish the circumstances that led to the collapse and whether any negligence or violation of prescribed standards was involved.
