Assam becomes India’s first state to install Scientific MCU System for criminal tracking

Assam has become the first state in India to implement the Measurement Collection Unit (MCU) system under the Criminal Procedure Identification Act, 2022, marking a groundbreaking advancement in crime detection and investigative policing.

Speaking about the initiative, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Munna Prasad stated that the introduction of MCU facilities represents a major stride toward scientific policing in the state. He emphasized that the system is designed to ensure that habitual or repeat offenders cannot escape the law.

Under the newly launched mechanism, DNA of accused individuals will be collected and preserved using advanced forensic procedures. While earlier police records included only digitised fingerprints, the MCU system will now store retina scans, full-body measurements, and other biometric identifiers in a secure, interconnected digital database.

Officials added that the digital data can be accessed by police forces across the country, enabling speedy identity verification of suspects and improving inter-state coordination during investigations.

MCU facilities have already been installed in all district headquarters of Assam, positioning the state at the forefront of forensic technology integration nationwide. The system is expected to play a crucial role in cases involving crimes against women and children, as the DNA profiles of accused offenders in such cases will also be preserved.

Authorities believe this scientific approach will boost accuracy, transparency, and efficiency in identifying criminals, ultimately helping to curb recurring criminal activities across Assam.
