Assam: BIS conducts raid at Chirang jewellery shop over alleged sale of gold with fake hallmarks
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a search and seizure operation at Ma Kali Jewellers, located on the Bijni-Panbari Road in Assam’s Chirang district, over allegations of selling gold jewellery bearing fake hallmarks.
Officials from the BIS Guwahati branch carried out the operation following allegations that the jewellery store was using counterfeit hallmarks to mislead customers.
The operation was aimed at ensuring the sale of genuine gold jewellery and protecting consumers by maintaining quality standards.
The BIS has stated that jewellers are required to comply with its prescribed rules and regulations while using hallmarks on gold jewellery. The use of fake hallmarks to mislead customers is a punishable offence under the law.
Under the BIS Act, 2016, strict action can be taken against such violations.
The bureau has also urged consumers to verify the authenticity of hallmarks before purchasing gold jewellery. Officials said that enforcement drives against the use of fake hallmarks would continue.
