Assam BJP certain to sweep Haflong; NPP, Congress to trail far behind, predicts CEM Debolal Gorlosa

Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, stating that it no longer has any political agenda and that its condition has become “pathetic.”

Addressing the media in Haflong, Gorlosa claimed that ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, several Congress leaders and workers from Dima Hasao district are likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He asserted that in the 113 Haflong Assembly constituency, neither the Congress nor the National People's Party (NPP) would pose a challenge to the BJP in the forthcoming polls.

Gorlosa predicted that the NPP would secure not more than 9,000 to 10,000 votes, while Congress might get between 30,000 and 40,000 votes, with the remaining votes going in favour of the BJP. He further claimed that whoever is nominated as the BJP candidate from Haflong will win the seat.

On being asked about the probable BJP candidate for the Haflong constituency, Gorlosa said the decision would be taken by the party leadership. He maintained that seeking a ticket is the right of aspirants, adding that sitting MLA and State Minister Nandita Gorlosa may seek renomination. BJP members of the autonomous council, as well as individuals from NGOs and student organisations, could also seek tickets, he said, but the final decision would rest with the state BJP president and the Chief Minister.

Responding to a question on whether his “blessings” would influence the party’s candidate selection, Gorlosa clarified that he has no personal role in the matter and described himself as a disciplined party worker who functions according to party directives.

In a pointed remark, he alleged that in the past, candidates in the autonomous council had to pay money for nominations under previous regimes. However, he asserted that no such practice exists in the BJP, claiming that party tickets are not sold.
