Assam: Boko hosts annual day-night volleyball tournament under RHAC initiative

Gandhi Maidan in Boko buzzed with sporting fervour as the Seventh Annual Men’s and Fourth Annual Women’s Day-Night Prize Money Volleyball Tournament was formally inaugurated under the aegis of the Rabha Hasong Sports Association. The event is being organised with the support of the Rabha Hasong Volleyball Association and the Boko Volleyball Training Centre, marking another significant step towards strengthening grassroots sports in Kamrup district.

The tournament was inaugurated by Arjun Chetri, Executive Member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC), who also oversees the Council’s Sports and Youth Welfare Department. Addressing the gathering, Chetri said the tournament is being held with financial assistance from the RHAC’s 2024–25 budget allocation earmarked for Kamrup district.

A total of eight men’s teams and four women’s teams from various parts of the district are competing in the tournament, which is expected to showcase emerging talent and promote healthy competition among local players.

Highlighting RHAC’s broader vision for youth development, Chetri said the Council has been consistently organising sports tournaments including football, volleyball, kabaddi, taekwondo and wushu across its jurisdiction. He noted that such initiatives are aimed at identifying talent at the grassroots level, enhancing skill development, and creating wider opportunities for young sportspersons from Rabha Hasong areas.

The prize money structure reflects the Council’s focus on encouraging competitive excellence. In the men’s category, the champion team will receive ₹15,000, while the runners-up will be awarded ₹10,000. In the women’s category, the winners will take home ₹10,000, with the runners-up receiving Rs 7,000.

With enthusiastic participation from teams and strong local support, the tournament is expected to further deepen the sporting culture in Kamrup district while providing a vital platform for players to display their talent under competitive conditions
