Assam: BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary demands BTC elections in March-April

Bodoland People's Front (BPF) President and former BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary has demanded that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections be conducted in March or April, aligning with the end of the financial year. 

Addressing the media, Mohilary asserted that holding elections during this period complies with legal mandates and ensures proper fiscal management under the current Pramod Boro-led government.

Criticizing Boro's push for December elections, Mohilary claimed it would grant the administration a six-month fiscal year allocation, violating financial norms. He further accused Boro of neglecting the welfare of specific communities during his tenure as Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief.

The tenure of Pramod Boro's BTC government is set to conclude in April 2024, in line with the current budget cycle. Political parties, including the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the opposition BPF, are intensifying preparations for the upcoming elections.

27 members from the Ex-National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Ex-NDFB), All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), and the UPPL youth wing joined the BPF during a meeting at Bishmuri. Additionally, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Prabin Boro and Congress leader Deepjyoti Saharia officially joined the BPF on January 16 at a meeting held at Bathou Kherai Resort in Chirang, attended by Hagrama Mohilary.

With political momentum building, the upcoming BTC elections are poised to reshape the region's political landscape.
