Assam: BTC council to revive cattle markets, approves land pattas for landless families

The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Executive Council on June 4 took two major decisions aimed at boosting economic activity and addressing land ownership issues in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Briefing the media after an Executive Council meeting in Kokrajhar, BTC Executive Member Maheswar Basumatary said the council had decided to revive old cattle markets and establish new ones across the BTR.

He said the move is intended to strengthen the rural economy and provide greater opportunities for farmers, livestock owners and traders. The proposed cattle markets are expected to facilitate livestock trade and create additional avenues for income generation in the region.

In another significant decision, the Executive Council approved a resolution to provide land pattas to landless people residing in both rural and urban areas of the BTR.

Basumatary said the initiative seeks to address long-standing land ownership issues and fulfil a key commitment made by the Bodoland People's Front (BPF). The move is expected to benefit a large number of families who have been living without legal land titles.

The decisions were taken during the Executive Council meeting held at the BTC headquarters in Kokrajhar. Further details regarding the implementation process and eligibility criteria are expected to be announced in the coming days.

The measures are being viewed as significant steps towards promoting economic development and ensuring greater social security for residents across the Bodoland Territorial Region.
