The nomination process for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections commenced on Monday, September 1 at the Kokrajhar District Commissioner’s Office, drawing considerable political attention and public engagement. The elections are scheduled for September 22, 2025, and parties are already gearing up for a high-stakes contest across the region.
The ruling United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), a key signatory to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) peace agreement, announced its candidates for several prominent constituencies:
Lawrence Islary, sitting MLA, for Salakati
Ranjit Basumatary, BTC Executive Member, for Baokhungri
Rabiram Brahma for Banargaon
Afzal Hoque Sarkar for Fakiragram
The Indian National Congress (INC) responded with its candidates:
Sunil Narzary for Baokhungri
Matilal Basumatary for Banargaon
Meanwhile, Budhadeb Musahary filed his nomination as an independent candidate in the Deborgaon constituency, signaling a diversified electoral battle in the region.
The nomination venue witnessed a strong political presence, with Assam Cabinet Minister U.G. Brahma among the senior leaders in attendance. Massive crowds of supporters from multiple political parties underscored the intensity of political mobilization ahead of the elections.
Speaking to the media, Minister Brahma expressed confidence in his party’s prospects:
“UPPL is performing well in all 40 constituencies. We are confident of forming the government on our own.”
He added, “We are very happy that all communities of the region are supporting UPPL and will choose us to form the next government.”
