Assam: Cattle herders face crisis as beef sale ban affects Sivasagar

Cattle herders in Sivasagar district are facing severe financial setbacks following the ban on beef sales in the region. The Rajmai cattle market, one of the oldest and largest in Upper Assam, has seen a drastic reduction in buyers, leaving cattle owners unable to sell their livestock.

The ban, which has affected cattle markets across Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, and Tinisukia districts, has led to widespread frustration among local herders.

Many have voiced their concerns, attributing the situation to a recent statement made by Member of Parliament (MP) Rokibul Hussian, which they believe has fueled the current crisis.
The Rajmai market, where hundreds of cattle herders once gathered to sell their animals, is now seeing fewer transactions, as demand for cows has dropped. The loss of livelihood is putting immense pressure on the herders who rely on cattle sales as their primary source of income.

Political leaders' differing views on the beef sale ban have further complicated the issue, with herders expressing disappointment over the lack of a clear resolution. Some have called for the immediate reversal of the ban, citing its detrimental effects on the local economy and the livelihood of cattle farmers.
