The Central government has sanctioned Rs 15 crore the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Dhubri, Assam, to advance the Swachh Bharat Mission. The initiative is crucial for improving the quality of used water and sewage for which two bighas, two kathas, and six lechas of land have been handed over to a private company for the construction of the plant.
The contract estimate of approximately 15 crores was held previously in Guwahati, and the private company ACE Alliance Private Limited lawfully bid for it.
A team visited Dhubri on August 30, with Dr. Debamoy Sanyal, the chairman of the Dhubri Municipal Board, present to take responsibility for the land in Jogomaya Ghat, Ward No. 3.
The purpose of the visit was to construct the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), which would reduce and filter the sewage of large particles, sand, and debris.
In an interview, Dr Debamoy Sanyal said that the principle of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) involves the treatment of wastewater. "Sewage, if allowed to enter water sources without treatment, will contaminate them which is why it is essential to treat sewage properly before letting it into rivers or streams for example," he said.
A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a facility that collects, treats, and discharges wastewater from residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial sources. It is essential to treat sewage before its entry into any water body through a series of physical, biological, and chemical processes to remove pollutants and contaminants.
STPs are vital for public health and environmental protection, as they remove contaminants and pathogens from wastewater, making it safe to release into natural water sources. Sewage usually contains a high quantity of organic wastes and may also consist of inorganic wastes, which is considered clean after secondary treatment, but tertiary treatment returns it to an even higher quality for release in protected waters.
All the sewage will flow via this STP site even though Dhubri town's drainage systems are all partly interconnected; however, the plant is built to serve most Wards, and its premium machinery will be equipped in terms of technology.
