Assam: Chamaria Satra Mahotsav concludes with grand Ram Vijay Bhaona

The four-day Tirobhav Tithi Mahotsav at the sacred Chamaria Satra concluded on Friday with a spectacular staging of Ram Vijay Bhaona, drawing devotees from across Assam and reaffirming the Satra’s central role in the Neo-Vaishnavite tradition.

The festival, which began on February 17, marked the death anniversary (Tirobhav Tithi) of Sri Sri Borbisnu Ata, a revered disciple of Madhavdeva. The Mahotsav was observed with devotional fervour, as chants of Hari Naam and the rhythmic sounds of taal and khol reverberated through the Satra premises.

On the concluding day, Satra inmates performed a portion of Ram Vijay, the classic play composed by Srimanta Sankardeva, in the traditional Bhaona format. The centuries-old theatrical tradition captivated devotees and pilgrims, continuing an unbroken cultural practice spanning over 500 years.

Satradhikar Nigamananda Adhikari stated that the Mahotsav commemorates the Tirobhav of Sri Sri Borbisnu Ata at the very site where he had established the sacred Thaan. Earlier in the day, the Guru Asana and Bhagavat were ceremonially reinstalled in the Namghar, followed by a grand devotional procession led by the Satra’s gayan-bayan and devotees.

Participants from Dhing, Nagaon, Barpeta, Sorbhog, Goalpara and other parts of Assam attended the event, with the Satra premises witnessing an overwhelming turnout.

Among the dignitaries present were Sambit Patra, Member of Parliament from Puri, Odisha, and Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania. Their presence underscored the wider cultural and spiritual significance of the Mahotsav.

The Chamaria Satra once again emerged as a focal point of devotion, cultural heritage and communal harmony, as the timeless message of unity and bhakti resonated through the gathering.
