Assam: Chaos at BJP office in Basugaon as woman leader alleges molestation

A special meeting held at the newly inaugurated Chirang Mandal BJP office in Basugaon on Wednesday night turned chaotic following serious allegations of physical assault and molestation leveled against a local BJP leader.

The meeting, convened within the Gaudiya Math complex where the party’s new office was recently established, was intended to address growing internal tensions within the Mandal ahead of the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. However, the attempt at reconciliation quickly unraveled as clashes erupted between two rival factions within the Chirang Mandal BJP.

According to eyewitnesses, heated verbal exchanges and use of abusive language escalated the situation during the meeting, which was attended by Chirang District BJP President Ratan Chandra Roy, district in-charge Sukhen Roy, the Mandal president, secretary, and several other leaders and workers.

The situation turned grave when a woman party member accused the Ward No. 4 Commissioner of the Basugaon Municipal Board—also a BJP leader—of physically assaulting her and attempting to outrage her modesty by tearing her clothes during the altercation.

The incident, which occurred in the presence of senior district functionaries, has triggered widespread condemnation from party workers, particularly women members, who are now demanding immediate disciplinary and legal action against the accused.

The internal conflict and alleged assault have raised pressing questions about leadership accountability, internal discipline, and the safety of female workers within the party's organizational structure.

An internal inquiry is expected to be initiated, although no official statement has been released by the BJP district leadership at the time of reporting.
