Assam: Chaos at Karimganj College, NSUI-ABVP clash over ‘Niyut Moina’ event

A government event meant to promote the ‘Niyut Moina’ scheme turned chaotic at Karimganj College in Sribhumi town, as a violent clash broke out between student factions from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The confrontation unfolded during the formal distribution of forms under the flagship welfare scheme, which aims to empower young women across Assam. Subrata Bhattacharya, former president of the BJP Sribhumi District Unit, had been invited as the chief guest for the event by the state government.

Tensions escalated when NSUI members objected to Bhattacharya’s presence and his role in handing out the scheme forms, citing political bias. The protest quickly turned aggressive, leading to a physical altercation with ABVP supporters. In the chaos, a group of enraged students vandalised the college’s tin gate, prompting immediate intervention.

A large contingent of police personnel was dispatched to the college premises to restore order and prevent further violence. Authorities were able to bring the situation under control without any reported injuries.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by either the college administration or representatives of the student organisations involved.
