Assam: Civil society groups demand ban on loud DJ sound systems in Sribhumi ahead of Durga Puja

With Durga Puja festivities approaching, concerns over the use of high-decibel DJ sound systems have resurfaced in Sribhumi. On Wednesday, a memorandum was submitted to District Commissioner Pradip Kumar Dwivedi, urging a ban on DJs during religious processions and immersions.

The petition, led by the Kaibarta community organization, along with the Sribhumi Ramakrishna Mission Maharaj and former Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das, highlighted the harmful impact of loud DJ music on critically ill patients, many of whom reportedly experience worsened conditions during festival days.

Critics also emphasized the cultural dilution caused by DJs, arguing that electronic music has no place in traditional celebrations. “DJ sound is not our culture; dhols and traditional drums are part of our heritage,” stated Mission Ranjan Das.

The organizations urged authorities to enforce strict controls and ensure that processions uphold cultural practices while safeguarding public health. The memorandum comes as debates intensify across Assam and other states about balancing festive celebrations with community well-being.
