Assam: Class IX student dies by suicide in Moran, family alleges mental harassment by teacher and classmate
A 14-year-old Class IX student of Bamunbari High School in Assam’s Moran allegedly died by suicide, with her family alleging that sustained mental harassment by a teacher and a classmate following a dispute at school drove her to take the extreme step. Police have registered a complaint and an investigation is expected to follow.
The deceased student has been identified as Aini Sonowal, a resident of Bamunbari Garh Pathar. According to family members, the incident occurred on June 16 when Aini was alone at home.
As per information provided by the family, Aini had earlier been involved in a disagreement with one of her classmates. Subsequently, allegations surfaced that she had created a fake Instagram account in the classmate’s name and posted objectionable comments using the photograph of a female teacher.
Following the incident, the concerned teacher reportedly summoned Aini to the school. The family has alleged that during the course of the matter, the student faced severe mental pressure and harassment from both the teacher and the classmate.
The family further alleged that as a form of punishment linked to the social media incident, Aini was compelled by the teacher to upload an objectionable WhatsApp status using her father’s mobile phone. After the status appeared on the account, relatives and acquaintances from the village reportedly began contacting and questioning the family.
According to family members, the resulting social embarrassment and emotional distress deeply affected the teenager. They alleged that Aini became mentally disturbed in the days leading up to the incident.
Aini’s mother has demanded justice and urged the administration to conduct a fair inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death.
Meanwhile, Aini’s father lodged an FIR at Bamunbari Police Outpost on Wednesday, naming the teacher and the classmate in the complaint. The student’s elder brother also expressed anger over the alleged treatment of Aini and appealed to the authorities to take appropriate action.
No official statement from the school administration or police regarding the allegations had been reported at the time of filing this report.
