Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, July 31 addressed the ongoing investigation into allegations concerning Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife and her purported links to Pakistan. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma emphasized the jurisdictional limitations of the Assam Special Investigation Team (SIT) currently handling the case.
“The SIT in Assam has a very limited scope. It cannot access telephonic records or connections beyond two years,” the Chief Minister said, adding that while this constraint is known, the team has performed commendably within its given mandate.
Highlighting the deeper nature of the case, Sarma said, “Since the issue is related to citizenship and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), it eventually falls under the purview of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have the capacity to trace details as far back as 2010–2011.”
He confirmed that the state government has not yet approached the NIA to take over the probe. However, further decisions regarding jurisdiction will be made after the SIT submits its final report by September 10.
“There will be no extension of time for the SIT. They have been clearly instructed to complete the investigation within the given timeframe. The report will be presented to the Cabinet by September 11 or 12, and a final decision on whether to refer the case to the NIA, CBI, or the Ministry of Home Affairs will be taken before September 15,” Sarma concluded.
