Assam CM condemns grenade attack on police camp in Jagun, vows action against perpetrators

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, March 22, strongly condemned the brazen pre-dawn attack on an Assam Police Commando camp at Jagun in Tinsukia district, asserting that security forces have already launched a counter-insurgency operation and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“This is highly condemnable. The Army and the Police have launched a counter-insurgency operation. I think those who have done this will certainly be nabbed,” the Chief Minister said, reacting sharply to the incident that has raised fresh security concerns in Upper Assam.

The incident took place at around 2 am on March 22 at Jagun 10 Mile, a sensitive tea garden belt near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. According to police sources, unidentified assailants targeted the commando camp with at least five grenades before opening heavy gunfire.

Security personnel stationed at the camp retaliated immediately, triggering an intense gunfight that lasted nearly 30 minutes. The swift response from the commandos is believed to have prevented further casualties and forced the attackers to retreat under pressure.

Four police commandos sustained injuries in the exchange of fire. While three suffered minor wounds, one personnel was seriously injured and shifted to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. The injured have been identified as Chitrangjan Milli from Jorhat, Devashis Bora, and Ravi Gar of Gowala Para in Chabua.

The banned proscribed insurgent outfit, ULFA (Independent), which has been active in parts of Upper Assam, has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The incident has prompted heightened security across the region, with joint operations by the Assam Police and the Army underway to track down the attackers. Additional forces have been deployed in and around Jagun to prevent any further escalation.
