Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma hails India’s BRICS chairmanship, calls for global peace plan

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 11 welcomed India’s chairmanship of BRICS, describing the hosting of the summit in the country as a “unique achievement” and saying the grouping has a “historical responsibility” to help address the current global crisis.

Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma said the geopolitical situation, particularly tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, has increased the importance of BRICS in efforts towards global stability.

“Holding the BRICS Summit in India is a unique achievement. With this crisis in the entire world, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz and all, BRICS has a lot of historical responsibility to lead the world,” Sarma said.

The Assam CM said he was particularly pleased that India is chairing the grouping at a critical juncture under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I am extremely happy that at this juncture, India is the chairman of BRICS under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

Sarma expressed confidence that BRICS would come up with a concrete roadmap aimed at promoting peace and prosperity across the world.

“Definitely, BRICS will come out with a definite plan of action for the peace and prosperity of the world,” he said.

His remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions and disruptions affecting global trade and energy security, including concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
