Assam CM inaugurates northeast’s first fully modern correctional facility in Chirang

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated the newly constructed district jail at Kajalgaon in Chirang district — officially recognized as Northeast India’s first fully modern correctional facility.

The state-of-the-art prison complex, built with a focus on rehabilitation and humane incarceration, marks a new era in Assam’s prison infrastructure. The facility, which boasts advanced amenities and inclusive systems, is designed to accommodate 636 inmates, including both undertrial prisoners and convicts.

Setting it apart from conventional jails in the region, the Chirang District Jail includes dedicated quarantine zones, ensuring that health and hygiene protocols are thoroughly maintained. Its infrastructure has been developed with a reformative approach rather than a punitive one.

The complex houses separate modern medical units for male and female inmates, classroom spaces to support educational and skill development, and a well-equipped library — all aimed at promoting reformation, self-improvement, and reintegration into society.

Speaking at the inaugural event, CM Sarma emphasized the state government’s commitment to modernizing correctional facilities and aligning them with national and international standards of inmate care and rehabilitation. “This is not just a jail, but a centre for transformation,” he noted.
