Assam CM questions Rahul Gandhi over SIR remarks, demands apology

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 26 criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding an apology following the Election Commission of India’s reported clarification that its decisions on the SIR and Form 6 were unanimous.

Speaking in Delhi, Sarma said the Election Commission’s full bench had clarified that there were no differences of opinion within the Commission regarding the decisions. He alleged that Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party and its supporters had created a nationwide uproar by claiming that disagreements existed within the poll body and demanding that the SIR be rolled back and the Chief Election Commissioner resign.

Following the clarification, Sarma questioned whether Gandhi and the Congress leadership would apologise to the country for their earlier statements. He also criticised what he described as repeated attacks by the Congress on constitutional institutions.

The Assam Chief Minister alleged that Gandhi and the Congress had consistently questioned the Election Commission, the Supreme Court, the Indian Army and the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), claiming that such criticism had become a pattern.

Sarma’s remarks came amid the political controversy surrounding the SIR process and the role of the Election Commission. His comments and allegations reflect the BJP leader’s position on the issue.
