Assam CM visits flood-hit Jorhat villages, assures full government support to affected families

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 22, visited the flood-affected villages of Solmora and Borigaon in Jorhat district to assess the damage caused by the devastating floods and review ongoing relief and rescue operations.

During the visit, the Chief Minister interacted with affected families, took stock of the flood situation with district officials and assured residents that the state government would provide all possible assistance for relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding.

Describing the flood situation as "very serious", Sarma said the state had suffered significant human and infrastructural losses.

"The flood situation is very serious. Several people have lost their lives, while many others are still missing. Today, I visited the flood-affected districts of Upper Assam to assess the situation. Tomorrow, I will visit Golaghat," the Chief Minister told reporters.

Sarma said the Bhogdoi River had breached embankments at five locations, aggravating the flood situation in several parts of Jorhat district. He announced that reconstruction work on the damaged embankments would begin immediately to prevent further inundation.

"The Bhogdoi River has breached embankments at five places. We will immediately start reconstructing these embankments. Relief and rescue operations are continuing, and the government will extend every possible assistance to the affected people. Whatever hardships the people are facing, we will stand by them and provide all necessary support," he said.

The Chief Minister said the state administration, along with disaster response agencies, was working round the clock to ensure that relief materials, medical assistance and rehabilitation support reached people stranded in flood-affected areas.

Referring to reports of a possible cloudburst in Mon district of Nagaland, Sarma said the Assam government was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the neighbouring state.

"We have received information that there may have been a cloudburst in Nagaland's Mon district. Once the flood situation comes under control, we will conduct a thorough investigation to understand what actually happened. We are in constant touch with the Nagaland Government and are analysing satellite imagery to determine the cause of the disaster," he said.

He added that the findings of the investigation would help the government take preventive measures to minimise the risk of similar disasters in the future.

The Chief Minister's visit comes amid worsening flood conditions across Upper Assam, where continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers have inundated large areas, damaged infrastructure and displaced thousands of people. Relief and rescue operations are continuing as authorities remain on high alert.
