Assam: College teachers stage statewide protest over service-related demands
College teachers in Assam staged a statewide protest on October 30, leaving their classrooms and joining demonstrations on college premises over various service-related demands.
In Juria College in Nagaon district, professors and lecturers staged a sit-in protest from 10:30 am to 12 noon as part of the state-wide agitation called by the Assam College Teachers’ Association (ACTA). Similar demonstrations were held at colleges across the state during the same hours.
During the protest, teachers urged the state government to address their demands, which include the withdrawal of the controversial Office Memorandum (OM) 2013, scrapping of the National Pension System (NPS) and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
Other demands include a permanent arrangement for government grants, full implementation of UGC regulations and an increase in the retirement age of college teachers to 65 years.
