A political controversy has erupted in Assam’s Karbi Anglong after the Congress party levelled serious corruption charges against Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang.
The allegations centre around the alleged misuse of a government dairy entrepreneurship scheme meant for public benefit, but reportedly availed by Minister Mallabaruah’s wife.
At the heart of the allegations lies the Garukhuti Project, under which 300 Gir cows were procured. Due to inadequate infrastructure, around 90 cows went unaccounted for, prompting concerns over mismanagement and potential diversion. Reports also surfaced of Gir cows mysteriously disappearing from Rangiya railway station, triggering public and media scrutiny.
In a press conference, Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC) leaders Charisma Rongpipi, Media Chairperson, and Islamul Hoque, District Coordinator, accused the ruling BJP of favouritism and abuse of public resources. Rongpipi alleged that the cows were secretly distributed among BJP MLAs and said, “This scheme was not a political favour but a legitimate opportunity meant for the people of Assam. Diverting benefits to those in power is nothing short of betrayal.”

She also accused KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang of using 150 Jersey cows under another government scheme for his private farm, which she claims produces 15,000 eggs daily. “Veterinary department officials are working at his personal farm while drawing government salaries. This is an outright misuse of public funds,” Rongpipi asserted.
The Congress leaders further alleged that the KAAC leadership operates in an authoritarian manner, suppresses dissent, and manipulates development schemes for private gain. “There is no space for private profiteering in public service. If these issues remain unchecked, democracy in Assam will be at risk,” said Hoque.
The KADCC has demanded an independent investigation into the matter and called on citizens to stand against what they termed “cronyism in governance.” With mounting public interest, pressure is now on the state government to respond to the growing demands for transparency and accountability.
