Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Borah has sharply criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of engaging in a "political conspiracy" earlier this month. In a video shared on Friday (December 6), Borah took aim at Sarma's recent comments on banning beef consumption in the state.
Borah also slammed Sarma’s remark asking him to write to the CM to ban beef in Assam, questioning, "Does the Chief Minister take actions based on what I ask him to do?"
Borah emphasised that the Congress has always supported the cultural and religious diversity of Assam, stating, "We have never interfered with the eating habits or cultural practices of individuals."

He further pointed out that while the BJP and RSS promote Gau Puja (cow worship) and condemn cow slaughter, it is crucial to respect the eating preferences of every community as per their culture and tradition.
Borah reiterated that the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom, a principle that he claimed only Congress truly upholds and defends.

The Congress leader further spoke about the legacy of Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom Kingdom, highlighting how the historical ruler respected cultural diversity and never imposed his culture, religion, or language on others in the state.
"Sukapha won over many small kingdoms, but he never sought to dominate or erase their traditions," Borah said, contrasting this with the BJP and RSS’s alleged attempts to impose their views in Assam.
