Assam: Congress leader alleges fake letter plot to block Gaurav Gogoi’s Barpeta visit

Congress leader Zakir Hussain Sikdar has alleged that the BJP, AGP, and their IT cells were behind a fabricated letter aimed at preventing Gaurav Gogoi from attending a party meeting in Barpeta. He claimed the letter, falsely attributed to the local Congress unit, was sent to Bhupen Boral to create confusion and damage Gogoi’s image ahead of a key election.

“No such letter was ever issued by the Congress unit in Barpeta,” Sikdar stated. “This is a fabrication designed to divide and demoralise our supporters.”

He said the act was part of a broader effort to derail Gogoi’s campaign, which includes a schedule of 100 public meetings across Assam. Sikdar emphasised that local Congress workers are fully prepared to support Gogoi’s outreach and described the incident as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

Sikdar also warned of legal consequences for those behind the letter and the wider campaign. He accused certain Congress dissidents of working in coordination with the AGP and BJP.

“The more they try to defame Gaurav Gogoi, the stronger he becomes,” he said.

On recent rumours regarding Gogoi’s travel history and his child’s citizenship, Sikdar dismissed them as politically motivated. “The BJP is in power both at the Centre and in the state. The Home Minister and the Chief Minister have already addressed this. Their real concern is Gogoi’s growing popularity.”

He criticised the BJP for focusing more on targeting Congress leaders than delivering development. Sikdar claimed that the ruling party is trying to turn Gogoi into a political distraction out of fear ahead of the May 26 election.

He further accused the BJP of misusing state machinery during the panchayat elections, including threats and obstruction of opposition candidates. Sikdar alleged that in several areas, nominations were blocked or withdrawn under pressure.

He singled out BJP MLA Padma Hazarika, calling him a “murderer of democracy” and accusing him of playing a central role in suppressing opposition activity in his constituency of Nagaon.

“Padma Hazarika and the BJP are among the most tainted figures in Assam’s political history,” Sikdar concluded. “In Nagaon, people have been systematically denied their rights.”
