Assam: Congress leader Debabrata Saikia hints at Bhupen Borah’s possible switch to BJP

Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Tuesday, February 17, hinted that former state Congress chief Bhupen Borah could be heading towards the Bharatiya Janata Party. His comments come a day after Bhupen Borah tendered his resignation from the party.

Speaking to the media, Saikia said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as an elected head of government, deserves to be welcomed wherever he goes. “The Chief Minister should be welcomed wherever he goes because he is the elected CM of Assam,” Saikia said.

However, the Congress veteran did not hold back when it came to internal developments within the party. Referring to Bhupen Borah’s recent statements critical of the Congress, Saikia remarked, “Now, Bhupen Borah has started abusing the Congress. I feel that Bhupen Borah will join the BJP, but I cannot say what is on his mind.”

The statement is significant at a time when the Assam Congress has been grappling with internal dissent and a shifting political narrative ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Borah, who has been a prominent face of the party in the state, has recently taken a confrontational stance, fuelling rumours of a possible political realignment.

While there has been no official confirmation from Borah regarding any move to the BJP, Saikia’s remarks are likely to intensify speculation and deepen fault lines within the opposition camp.
