Senior Assam Congress leader and two-time Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi drew a massive turnout in Margherita on September 1, where over 500 workers from BJP, AGP and smaller parties formally joined the Congress.
Bordoloi arrived in the town to a bike rally that stretched from Powai Railway Gate to Margherita Congress Bhawan, signalling strong local enthusiasm. At the Bhawan, he addressed a packed gathering of nearly 4,000 party workers during a meeting and BLA training camp.
The defections marked a notable boost for the Congress in the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency, a seat where party presence has been under pressure in recent years. The shift of workers from rival parties was seen as a morale booster for local cadres ahead of upcoming political battles.
Speaking at the event, Bordoloi launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, accusing it of failing the people of Assam and promising that Congress would present a stronger alternative.
