The Dima Hasao District Congress Committee has levelled serious allegations against Haflong Police, accusing them of failing to act on a First Information Report (FIR) filed against one Prabin Hagzar, who allegedly issued life threats to Congress leader Bapujit Langthasa and his family.
In protest, a Congress delegation led by District Congress President Haizerangbe Neume submitted a memorandum to Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngate, seeking immediate intervention and legal action.
According to the Congress, Langthasa was threatened by Hagzar on Tuesday while he was picking up his child from tuition. Hagzar allegedly confronted him over comments made to the media linking him to the Haflong market syndicate and issued a chilling ultimatum — to withdraw his statement or face fatal consequences.
Despite Langthasa lodging an FIR at Haflong Police Station following the incident, Congress leaders claim that no case has been registered nor has Hagzar been arrested. Speaking to the press, Congress leaders Rathindra Thaosen and Kalpana Hojai (President of the Dima Hasao District Mahila Congress) expressed grave concern over what they described as a "collapsing law and order situation" in the district.
They further alleged that similar complaints from Maibang and Umrangso have been ignored by law enforcement in recent months, adding that even after FIRs were submitted, the police failed to file cases or make arrests. “There is growing fear among the people. Trust in the police is rapidly eroding,” said Thaosen.
The Congress leaders urged the administration to ensure that law and order is restored in the hill district and that threats to public representatives are taken seriously. They demanded that Hagzar be arrested immediately and charged under appropriate legal provisions.
In a related concern, Thaosen also criticized North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Executive Member Debolal Garlosa for not fulfilling his pledge to dismantle the market syndicate operating in Haflong. “Despite public assurances, the syndicate is still active. Prices of essential goods have skyrocketed, and the public is suffering,” he said.
Congress leader Kalpana Hojai confirmed that the District Commissioner had assured the party that firm action would be taken against Hagzar.
