Assam: Coordination Committee Against CAA planning protest in Guwahati, demands repeal of Act

The Coordination Committee Against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam has announced plans to hold protests at Dighalipukhuri advocating for the repeal of the controversial legislation. The protest program spearheaded by the committee highlights two primary demands: The repeal of CAA with the aim to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and safeguard democracy and the Constitution and ensuring free and fair elections emphasizing the importance of democratic principles in the electoral process.

The Supreme Court is set to hear the case against CAA filed by the Coordination Committee on April 9th adding legal weight to their stance against the legislation. Renowned scholar, writer, and social scientist Dr. Hiren Gohain is leading the initiative against CAA. With a distinguished academic background, Gohain's opposition to the contentious law underscores the gravity of the issue.

Born in Golaghat in 1939, Gohain's academic journey includes achievements such as receiving the Sahitya Akademi award and obtaining a PhD from Cambridge University. His tenure as a professor at both Dibrugarh and Gauhati Universities reflects his deep-rooted commitment to education and scholarship. Gohain's outspoken nature and unwavering stance against socio-political injustices have garnered attention throughout his career.

Notably, during the Assam Movement (1979-1985), his critique evolved to acknowledge the legitimate concerns of the Assamese people, emphasizing the need for meaningful dialogue and resolution. However, Gohain's activism hasn't been without controversy.

Earlier in January 2019, he along with other prominent figures, faced sedition charges following their remarks during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
