Allegations of large-scale irregularities in the distribution of flood relief materials have surfaced in Sribhumi, prompting a high-level probe by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.
A five-member investigation team, led by Secretary Minakshi Nath Das, arrived in Sribhumi to look into the charges of corruption. The team has set up its base at the police guest house and begun an in-depth inquiry. A crucial meeting was also held with departmental officials at the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
The accusations center on the Sribhumi Sadar Circle Office, which has been accused of misappropriating relief supplies worth crores of rupees during the 2025 floods. While official records show the distribution of nearly 5,000 tarpaulin sheets under the office’s jurisdiction, local residents claim they never received them. Several individuals from Suprakandi GP alleged that relief was shown in their names on government records, but no materials reached them.
In addition to tarpaulins, allegations extend to the distribution of rice, pulses, and cooking oil. Locals alleged that instead of providing quality kerosene oil for relief purposes, inferior-grade “Tiger Mitho” oil was supplied.
The inquiry team, during its visit, met affected beneficiaries and collected key information and evidence from lists and records. Locals submitted detailed complaints directly to the Secretary, demanding strict action against officials responsible for the alleged misappropriation.
It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had earlier directed adequate distribution of relief materials for flood-affected residents of Sribhumi. However, according to residents, some officials exploited the situation to engage in large-scale looting in the name of relief.
