Assam court sentences man to 20 years in jail for sexually assaulting minor
A court in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Friday, May 15, sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge Nurjamal Haque also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict. In default of payment, the accused will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.
Officials identified the convict as Mohar Ali, a resident of Kamlachara village under Kokrajhar police station limits.
According to officials, the incident took place in 2022 when the accused allegedly sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl in a jute field near the banks of the Gaurang river in Kathalguri village.
Following the incident, the victim’s parents lodged an FIR at Kokrajhar police station, leading to the registration of the case and subsequent arrest of the accused.
After examining the evidence and witness testimonies, the court pronounced the conviction and awarded the sentence on Friday.
