Assam: CPI-affiliated bodies pay tribute to Anjel Chakma at Ledo

The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), both affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI), on December 31 evening organised a tribute programme for Anjel Chakma at the Ledo bus stand in Margherita.

The organisations paid homage to the Tripura student who was killed in Uttarakhand earlier this month, alleging that the incident was rooted in racial discrimination.

During the programme, speakers strongly condemned what they described as the recurring targeting of youths from the Northeast in different parts of the country. Addressing the gathering, Sanjeev Gangooli, Assistant Secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha, Assam State Council, said it was deeply unfortunate that young people from the Northeast continue to face racial abuse and violence.

Gangooli alleged that Northeastern youths are frequently subjected to racial slurs and stereotyping, being mocked with terms such as “Chinese,” “momo,” and “chinki,” and said such attitudes have, in several cases, led to serious crimes, including murder. He described the killing of Anjel Chakma as a brutal act that reflected a larger pattern of discrimination and intolerance.

He demanded the strictest possible punishment for all those involved in the crime, calling for exemplary action to ensure justice for the victim and to prevent similar incidents in the future. The CPI-affiliated organisations also urged authorities to take concrete steps to address racial discrimination and ensure the safety and dignity of people from the Northeast across the country.

The tribute programme concluded with a call for unity, justice, and stronger legal safeguards against racially motivated violence.
