Assam: Cyber crime mastermind Shariful Islam arrested in Kolkata after 2.5 years on run

Morigaon police have achieved a major breakthrough with the arrest of Shariful Islam, the alleged mastermind behind a wide-ranging cybercrime network.

He was nabbed in Kolkata following a meticulously planned operation by the district’s Crime Branch.

According to officials, Shariful had been evading arrest for the past two and a half years, frequently changing locations across 7 to 8 Indian states and even travelling to multiple foreign countries during this period. His arrest marks the culmination of an intensive week-long operation in Kolkata by a special Morigaon police team.

Police sources revealed that Shariful was involved in cyber fraud amounting to several crores of rupees. The money trail led investigators to various assets, including land purchased in Morigaon town. That property has already been seized under court orders.
