Assam: DCP denies police brutality claims in Chandmari, cites CCTV proof

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amitabh Basumatary on Thursday dismissed allegations of police brutality during a checking operation by Chandmari police, calling the claims “baseless” and citing CCTV footage that he says supports the police version of events.

According to Basumatary, on the night of June 9, police personnel at Karmach Point attempted to stop a youth named Amanullah Ali during a checking operation. The youth allegedly refused to stop and went on to assault two officers, Thaneshwar Basumatary and Boloram.

Despite these claims, Ali circulated a video on social media on June 10 accusing Chandmari police of assaulting him. He also lodged a formal complaint at the Geetanagar police station. However, DCP Basumatary said a medical examination found no signs of assault, and that the injuries Ali showed were pre-existing.

“While trying to stop the vehicle, he fell from his scooter,” Basumatary said, rejecting Ali’s allegation that he was beaten with a silencer pipe. “Our investigation has found all the evidence. The CCTV footage clearly shows the entire incident, and it is evident in the footage that it was the youth who assaulted the police.”

Police maintain that they have always worked for the safety of the public and that the operation was part of routine checking.

The incident has sparked debate on social media, with the police urging citizens not to share unverified claims that could damage the reputation of law enforcement officers engaged in public safety operations.
