Assam deputy speaker hails tribal development under BJP, slams Congress' 'decades of neglect'

Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker, Dr. Numal Momin has countered allegations made by state Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, asserting that the tribal regions of Assam have witnessed unprecedented development under the BJP-led government. He credited the transformation to the “dynamic leadership” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking to the media, Dr Momin said, “Under the dynamic leadership of PM Modi and Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the tribal areas are now prospering. All-round development is taking place, whether in Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao or the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and other tribal autonomous councils.”

He further claimed that the tribal people are, for the first time, experiencing development under a government that prioritises their welfare. “Congress ruled for over 60 years but never thought about the tribal community. During their tenure, terrorism and atrocities were prevalent in BTR, Dima Hasao, and Karbi Anglong. Now, the BJP government has successfully brought peace and development,” Momin added.

He rejected allegations made by Gogoi accusing the BJP of diluting tribal autonomy, calling them “totally baseless.” He urged the Congress to reflect on its own legacy in the tribal regions.

“I want to request that the State Congress chief should see retrospectively what they did in these tribal areas and what we are doing at present. If he compares, then I don't think he will dare to speak such things again and accuse this government,” he said.

Dr. Momin expressed confidence that the people of the tribal regions would once again back the BJP in the 2026 assembly elections. “The people of BTR, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao are very happy. The people will give a befitting reply in the upcoming 2026 assembly election."
