Assam: Deputy Speaker Numal Momin defends SIR, accuses Congress of benefiting from illegal voters

Reacting to Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of voter list manipulation, Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Numal Momin on Monday, November 24, defended the Centre’s initiatives, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken “a very strong step” to ensure transparency in the electoral process.

Momin said the Election Commission of India was, for the first time, undertaking a robust exercise to identify genuine voters and remove illegal names from electoral rolls. He accused the Congress of being “habitual beneficiaries” of illegal voters in past elections.

“Congress is worried that if Standardisation of Electoral Roll (SIR) is implemented in the five poll-bound assemblies, the outcome may mirror Bihar’s results,” Dr. Momin said. He added that Rahul Gandhi should have supported the reform, arguing that it would strengthen India’s democratic future.
“Instead of working for a brighter future, he tries to malign India’s image abroad. Naturally, SIR will not favour him,” he remarked.

Responding to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent statement on territorial issues, Dr. Momin said it was “natural” for border changes to be discussed, considering that Pakistan and Bangladesh were once part of undivided India.

Expressing strong support for Singh’s remarks, he said, “It is high time we reconsider our borders. India should take back PoK, and also reclaim parts of Bangladesh where another region could be created to protect minority communities persecuted on religious grounds.”
